Le chiffre d'affaires de l'affacturage africain a atteint environ 50 milliards d'euros (58 milliards de dollars US) en 2024, plus du double des 21,6 milliards d'euros enregistrés en 2017, avec près de 200 sociétés d'affacturage actives sur le continent, bien que l'Afrique reste une petite part du volume mondial et que l'activité soit concentrée en Afrique du Sud, qui représente plus de 80 % du total du continent ; Afreximbank s'est fixé pour objectif de faire passer l'affacturage africain à au moins 240 milliards d'euros face à un déficit de financement des PME africaines d'environ 276 milliards d'euros (300 milliards de dollars US). Le marché kényan est en phase initiale et largement sous-pénétré : une étude de l'International Finance Corporation a identifié un potentiel d'affacturage et de financement de la chaîne d'approvisionnement au Kenya d'environ 26 milliards d'euros (28,7 milliards de dollars US), parmi les plus grandes opportunités du continent, face à une activité actuelle très limitée, avec un développement soutenu par la zone de libre-échange continentale africaine, le système panafricain de paiement et de règlement et la numérisation croissante de la facturation.
Paysage concurrentiel. L'affacturage formel au Kenya est proposé principalement par un petit nombre de banques au sein de leurs divisions de financement du commerce et d'entreprise, ainsi que par des fintechs émergentes de financement des créances et des factures ; les fournisseurs d'affacturage indépendants dédiés sont rares. Westlip entre dans ce segment en tant que fournisseur indépendant agréé avec un produit d'affacturage commercial de recours standard, ses principaux défis étant la faible connaissance du marché de l'affacturage en tant qu'outil de fonds de roulement et sa petite taille par rapport aux services de financement du commerce des banques.
Environnement réglementaire et macroéconomique
La transition structurelle déterminante sur le marché principal de l'entreprise est le passage d'un marché de crédit numérique non réglementé à un marché agréé : la loi (amendement) de 2021 de la Banque centrale du Kenya et les règlements de 2022 sur les fournisseurs de crédit numérique (publiés le 18 mars 2022) ont soumis les prêteurs numériques auparavant non réglementés à la supervision de la CBK en réponse aux préoccupations concernant la tarification abusive, les frais opaques et les recouvrements agressifs. Le régime exige des fournisseurs agréés qu'ils soumettent leur politique de crédit, leur code de conduite et leur modèle de tarification, qu'ils divulguent le coût total du crédit, qu'ils informent les emprunteurs avant tout signalement négatif aux bureaux de crédit et qu'ils respectent les normes d'aptitude et de protection des données, la supervision étant partagée entre la CBK, l'Autorité kényane de la concurrence et le Bureau du commissaire à la protection des données ; pour un opérateur agréé, la conformité est une exigence d'entrée, et la pertinence concurrentielle réside dans le fait d'opérer de manière cohérente dans le cadre réglementaire tandis que les opérateurs non agréés sont progressivement exclus. Le durcissement potentiel est important pour un fournisseur faiblement capitalisé : en août 2025, la CBK a publié un projet de règlement sur les fournisseurs de crédit non-dépositaires proposant un système à plusieurs niveaux selon lequel les fournisseurs ayant au moins 20 millions KES de capital libéré détiendraient des licences complètes, ainsi que des frais annuels pouvant atteindre 500 000 KES. Le contexte macroéconomique est favorable : la CBK a abaissé son taux directeur de 13,0 % en août 2024 à 8,75 % en février 2026 avec une inflation de 4,4 % en janvier 2026, le crédit au secteur privé a retrouvé une croissance d'environ 5 % d'une année sur l'autre en septembre 2025, et le PIB réel, d'environ 4,9 % en 2025, est projeté à 5,5 % en 2026 et 5,6 % en 2027, au-dessus de la moyenne de l'Afrique subsaharienne d'environ 4,1 % — bien que le ratio des prêts non performants bruts du système bancaire se soit élevé à 15,5 % en janvier 2026 (en baisse par rapport à 17,6 % en août 2025), et les principaux risques macroéconomiques soient fiscaux, avec un déficit d'environ 4,8 à 5,9 % du PIB et un risque élevé d'endettement.
